CSHP Advocacy Report

Medical Assistance in Dying

The CSHP MAiD Position Statement was approved in April. The final document has been published on the CSHP website.

Pharmacare Position Statement

This Pharmacare Position Statement has been approved and is available online. CSHP is continuing to request to be heard by the Senate Committee of Health via in-person testimony to discuss pharmacare. The Pharmacare Position Statement was based on an open letter, which was previously presented to the Senate. Unfortunately, the Senate is unlikely to meet again before September. I hope to have more information to report on in the Winter PostScript.

Special Access Program (SAP)

Several members of the advocacy committee (Myrella Roy, Glen Pearson, and Cathy Lyder) met with an expanded SAP group that included the Director General of the Therapeutics Products Directorate, two individuals from the Office of Clinical Trials, and a SAP representative. Highlights from this meeting include: the SAP is attempting to increase transparency of their approval process, pharmacy students are beginning to complete rotations within the SAP, and SAP is contacting drug manufacturers to determine why commonly requested drugs are not marketed. The SAP also presented interesting stats, including:
  • SAP received 15000 requests in 2016
  • 87% requests were approved
  • 5.7% requests were considered incomplete
  • 3.7% requests were cancelled after SAP review
  • 2% requests denied
  • 1.2% requests withdrawn
Information from this meeting will be shared on the CSHP website, once approved. The SAP has agreed to meet with CSHP more frequently (CSHP recommended biannually).
